No. 18/20 NC State learned its opponent Monday night for the upcoming NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament and as an added bonus the team won’t need to ask for directions to get to Sunday’s game.
The Wolfpack, the fourth-seed in the Fresno Bracket, will take on 13-seeded Robert Morris at noon on Sunday at the RBC Center in Raleigh in the first-ever matchup between the two schools.
NC State earned its best seed in the NCAA’s since 2001 by compiling a 23-9 overall and is one of the hottest teams in the nation, having won 10 of its last 12 games. Back in 2001, the Pack’s run as a No. 4 seed also began in Raleigh at Reynolds Coliseum.
The Wolfpack becomes the first-ever four-seed to enter the NCAA tournament having beaten two No. 1 seeds (North Carolina, Duke) in the same season.
NC State makes its third straight and 20th appearance overall in the NCAA Tournament and owns a 17-19 all-time record.
For the fifth-straight year, the Atlantic Coast Conference will be represented by at least six teams in the NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament Field of 64.
Joining NC State is top-seeds North Carolina and Duke, Florida State, defending national champion Maryland and Georgia Tech.
Robert Morris earned its first-ever berth in the NCAA Tournament with a 68-66 victory over Sacred Heart in the Northeast Conference championship game, its third NEC title, and first since 1991. With the victory, Robert Morris improved to 24-7 overall on the 2006-07 campaign, helping the club establish a new school record for wins in a season.
The winner will take on the battle between No. 5 seed Baylor and No. 12 seed Chattanooga. The Lady Mocs are coached by former Kay Yow assistant Wes Moore.
Also in the Fresno Bracket are top-seeded Connecticut, second-seed Stanford and third-seeded LSU.
