RALEIGH, N.C. – Kay Yow received steady play from her NC State ball club to earn her 700th career victory, 68-51, over Florida State in Atlantic Coast Conference women’s basketball action Monday night at Reynolds Coliseum.
Yow joins an exclusive club, one that now features a mere six coaches at the Division I level that have compiled 700 career wins. Yow joins Tennessee’s Pat Summitt, Texas’ Jody Condradt, Rutgers’ Vivian Stringer, North Carolina’s Sylvia Hatchell and former LSU coach Sue Gunter.
“It’s a great win in so many ways,” announced Yow. “To come back home and face Florida State and jump out and get right down to business from the very beginning is a real pleasure for me to see the team perform like that.”
“It’s a great number in a lot of ways, added Yow. “Most of those wins came at NC State and is a great number for our program.”
Senior Gillian Goring continued her solid play of late for NC State (17-7, 6-3 ACC), scoring 19 points (8-10 FG) and tying her career-high with 12 rebounds to lead three players in double figures scoring. Junior Khadijah Whittington added 14 points and four steals, while senior Marquetta Dickens had 11 points, eight boards and five assists.
Britany Miller led Florida State (17-6, 6-2 ACC) with a game-high 22 points, while Alicia Davis-Cain had 11 points. Starting guard Shante Williams did not play due to a coach’s decision.
The Wolfpack never trailed for the third straight contest. That was due in large part to an 8-0 run to start the game and a 13-3 lead by the 15:45 mark after a 3-pointer by Shayla Fields.
The lead shrunk to 13-9 after the Pack missed five consecutive shots, but a short jumper by Goring made it 17-9 at the 11:07 point of the first half. The Seminoles never got closer than six points the rest of the way.
Senior Keisha Brown drained a pair from the charity stripe for a 32-15 advantage with 5:19 to go. The Charlotte, N.C. native later made it 41-17 after a four-on-one break led to a wide open 3-pointer by Brown. NC State went into halftime with a 41-19 lead.
The lead remained above the 20-point ledger for most of the second half. Goring’s layup at the 8:37 mark made it a 59-34 affair.
From there, the crowd sensed that the milestone was certainly within reach. Chants of “700” rang from the 2,162 patrons that attended another in a long line of historic moments at Reynolds. At the under four minute timeout, signs were passed out by the NC State cheerleaders that read – Kay Yow 700 Career Wins.
“I accept (700 wins) on behave of all former staff, current staff, former players and the current team”, explained Yow, who is now 700-321 all-time in 36 seasons on the sidelines. “Of course this could not have happened without all those people. I just happened to be the one person that has been around that long.”
NC State puts its four-game conference-winning streak on the line against Clemson on Thursday night at 7 pm at Reynolds.
