RALEIGH, N.C. - The NC State softball team will open the home portion of its 2007 schedule on Thursday, March 1, hosting the Elon Phoenix in a doubleheader at the Walnut Creek Softball Complex. Game times are scheduled for 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. Live stats will be available via the softball schedule page on GoPack.com.
NC State stands at 10-5 on the year after a 3-3 showing last weekend at the 2007 Hampton Inn Crimson Classic in Tuscaloosa, Ala. During the tournament, the Pack dropped its first two games against Indiana State and No. 5 Alabama, only to rally back and clinch a spot in the title bout with wins over Western Kentucky, Winthrop and Indiana State in a rematch. The Wolfpack fell a second time to the Crimson Tide, 6-0, in the championship game.
Heather Gelbard and Shaina Ervin were both named to the all-tournament team behind strong performances across the three-day affair. Gelbard homered against Western Kentucky and, with two outs and a full count in the bottom of the seventh, nailed a two-run double to right field to push the Pack over Winthrop. Ervin picked up two wins and struck out 24 batters while allowing just 12 hits and six earned runs in three appearances.
Elon enters the match-up with a 5-6 record on the season after hosting the Elon Invitational this past weekend in Burlington, N.C. Tracey Dahlen leads the Phoenix with a .389 batting average on 14 hits in 36 at-bats. Overall the team posts a .263 batting clip, with four players having hit home runs. The Wolfpack pitching staff, however, has only allowed two homers in 15 games.
Following the Elon series, NC State will open ACC play by hosting No. 19 Florida State. The Pack will take on the Seminoles in a doubleheader on Saturday, March 3, at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m., before wrapping up the series on Sunday, March 4, at 12 p.m.
