No. 24 Wolfpack Women Upset At ECU, 89-82

GREENVILLE, N.C. Jasmine Young scored 22 points to lead three East Carolina players in double figures in an 89-82 upset victory over No. 24 NC State in women’s basketball action Sunday at Minges Coliseum.
Khadijah Whittington notched her career-high with 26 points for the fourth time this year to pace NC State (8-3). Shayla Fields added 18 points, while Nikitta Gartrell and Amber White each tossed in 10 points for the Wolfpack.
LaCoya Terry and Nicole Days scored 19 and 13 points respectively for ECU (4-5), which had lost 19 straight in the series. It was the Pirates’ first win over the Pack since February 7, 1982.
A game that saw 53 fouls called, including a staggering 35 on NC State, ECU went 21-of-28 from the line in the second half that enabled them to build a double-digit lead over the final eight minutes of play.
A 3-pointer by Young made it 76-61 with 4:05 to play.
The Wolfpack picked up its full-court press down the stretch to make it a ball game. A 19-9 run in response to the Young 3-ball got the Pack to within five, 87-82 with 33 ticks remaining. But, two Impris Manning free throws sealed the Pirate victory.
A foul-laden first half left the host Pirates up 37-34 at the break. The Wolfpack were whistled for 17 of the 26 fouls called, however, the Pirates failed to capitalize missing 13 of its 25 attempts from the charity stripe to keep things close throughout.
NC State had a four-point possession at the 12:10 mark to take a 16-9 lead. After a Chanita Jordan layup, ECU coach Sharon Baldwin-Tener was nailed for a technical after still steaming over a call at the other end. Gartrell would convert both free throws.
Later on, ECU took its first lead of the afternoon, 20-18, on a pair on free throws by Young. But, Whittington answered back with four of her 12 first-half points for a 22-20 lead.
After both team’s traded five point spurts that left things tied up 27-27 and the Pack in foul trouble, ECU converted six straight free throws to take a 33-27 lead with just over four minutes left before half.
A Beal putback got NC State to within three points just before the half.
NC State hosts North Carolina A&T next Sunday at 2 pm.
