RALEIGH, N.C. Sophomore Amber White’s highly touted game arrived on Friday afternoon for NC State with 16 points, eight rebounds, six assists and four steals in a 83-36 demolishing of Alabama State at Reynolds Coliseum.
The 16 points was a career high for the Philadelphia native, who paced five NC State (11-3) players in double figures. Nikitta Gartrell added 14 points, while freshman Brittany Strachan had the best game of her brief career with 13 of the Pack’s 43 points from the reserves.
Megan Zullo and Khadijah Whittington tossed in 12 and 10 points respectively for NC State, who won its third in a row.
The week long holiday break certainly didn’t cool down Zullo’s shooting, canning her first four 3-pointers she took, giving her 13 makes in her last 16 attempts over the last three games.
ASU set out in a zone, making a point from the start to cave its defense inside, attempting to immobilize Whittington, the ACC’s scoring and rebounding leader. But the sharp-shooting Zullo has become a zone buster of late.
“Every time there is a zone I am always ready to shoot,” said Zullo. “And that has become one of my strengths. I guess I have found my rhythm.”
A trey at the 14:22 mark of the first half gave the Pack a 16-2 advantage.
The offense would then go stagnant for the red and white, scoring only three points over the next five minutes that allowed the Lady Hornets to get within ear shot at 19-10.
However, White began and ended a 15-0 run with a pair of jumpers that put the home team up 34-10 at the 4:35 mark.
Strahan, who hails from Kernersville, N.C., finished the first half strong with seven points over the final 2:20 to give NC State its largest halftime lead of the year up 45-14.
Erica Lumpkin led Alabama State (2-7) with 16 points, while Assunta Fulgham had 12 points in the Lady Hornets fourth straight loss.
“We maintained our focus for most of the game,” said head coach Kay Yow. “It was really encouraging to have some of our players step up and play at a consistent level.”
An 11-4 run to open the second half by NC State left little doubt to all at Kay Yow Court who was bringing home the victory this afternoon.
The lead would balloon to 49 points, 83-34, on a Chanita Jordan layup with just over two minutes to go in the game.
NC State is right back in action Sunday against Western Carolina for another 2 pm tip off at Reynolds Coliseum. Meanwhile, Alabama State will play Winston-Salem State tomorrow.
