NC State To Host Wolfpack Open on Saturday
11/2/2007 12:00:00 AM | Cross Country
RALEIGH, N.C. Don’t look for Atlantic Coast Conference cross country champion Chris Kollar on Saturday at the Wolfpack Invitational.
Kollar won’t be running in this race, which begins at 11 a.m. at the SAS Complex in Cary. In fact, none of the eight all-conference runners who led NC State last week at the ACC Championships will be running on Saturday. If you’re looking for anyone in an NC State uniform, think singular and not plural.
There will be several NC State runners in the race; all but two of them will be running unattached to preserve their redshirt status for the 2007 season. On the men’s side, redshirt-freshman Jason Morgan will be in a Wolfpack uniform. In the women’s race, redshirt-freshman Krista Moss will be wearing the NC State colors.
“This race is for those kids in the program who aren’t involved in the postseason races,” men’s coach Rollie Geiger said. “The athletes who ran last week at ACCs are in the middle of their [two-week] training cycle for regionals next weekend, so they won’t be available. This race is a chance for those other athletes in the program to get out there and run in a competitive race.”
The competiton will come mostly from college “B” teams and from other unattached runners. North Carolina will have its men’s “B” squad entered in the men’s race, and Duke will have full “B” teams in both races. The Blue Devils and Tar Heels both will have several runners competing unattached. Louisburg is sending four men, but will not figure in the team scoring.
In addition, the adidas Raleigh Track Club will have three women entries, including former Wolfpack runners Georgia Davis and Kris Roth.
