Cross Country Finishes 18th, 29th At NCAA Meet

NC State wrapped up the 2007 cross country season Monday at the NCAA Championships, with the men finishing 18th and the women 29th in their respective races.
The men took 18th with a team score of 439 points. Redshirt-senior Tibor Vegh paced the men’s team, finishing 78th overall and running the 10k course in a time of 30:59.1. Stephen Furst, also a fifth-year senior, was 93rd at 31:04.7, with redshirt-junior Gavin Coombs 115th at 31:15.1. Redshirt-seniors Wes Smith, 128th at 31:21.9, and Chris Kollar, 137th at 31:25.3, rounded out the scoring for the Wolfpack.
Liberty’s Josh McDougal won the individual championship with a time of 29:22.4, narrowly edging Oregon’s Galen Rupp by one second in a tense dual down the homestretch on the course in Terre Haute, Ind. Oregon won the team championship with a score of 85, followed by Iona at 113, Oklahoma State at 180, Northern Arizona at 190, and Wisconsin at 239.
The NC State women had a team score of 535. Senior Angelina Blackman was the Pack’s lead runner, taking 63rd place and running the 6k course in a time of 21:16.2. Junior Brittany Tinsley was 91st at 21:30.1. Sophomore Bona Jones finished 142nd at 21:50.5, and freshman Colleen Wetherbee was 170th at 22:05.6. Fellow freshman Marika Walker rounded out the scoring for NC State, running 221st at 22:43.5.
Sally Kipyego of Texas Tech repeated as individual women’s national champion in a blistering time of 19:30.9, defeating runnerup Jenny Barringer of Colorado by a whopping 16.9 seconds. Stanford won the team championship on the women’s side with a team score of 145, followed by Oregon at 177, Florida State at 236, Arizona State at 251, and Michigan State at 321.
