RALEIGH, N.C. NC State women’s basketball coach Kay Yow announced Wednesday that two student-athletes have signed National Letters of Intent on the first day of the early signing period.
Yow announced the commitments of forwards Michelle Davis and Bonae Holston for the Wolfpack Class of 2008.
“We’re very pleased to add two more front court players to an already talented group of players we have now,” said Yow. “We feel like this will add to our depth with the upcoming departure of All-ACC senior Khadijah Whittington.”
Davis, a 6-3 power forward from Cleveland, Tenn., has been named a pre-season honorable mention All-American by Street & Smith’s and according to Blue Star Report is the 55th best player in this class.
In addition, Basketball Time in Tennessee ranked her as the sixth best player in the state.
Davis is a three-year starter at Cleveland High School for head coach Rachel Powell. She has been a vital part of a program that has compiled an 86-22 record and has made three-consecutive trips to the Class AAA state tournament.
During her junior campaign, Davis led her club to a 32-4 record and was ranked as high as No. 8 in the country by USA Today. She averaged 15.0 points, 9.5 rebounds and 2.1 steals per game last season.
She has been selected All-District 5, All-Region 3 and to the Chattanooga Times Free Press All-Area team the last two seasons and was all-state by the Tennessee Sports Writers Association in 2007.
Davis was also named the Region 3 Class AAA Tournament MVP as a sophomore in 2006.
“Michelle is an ever improving player with a strong work ethic, which I think will make her even better at the college level,” said Cleveland head coach Rachel Powell. “She has good skill around the basket and can step out and make a jump shot. Michelle is our vocal team leader on and off the court”
Holston, who hails from Newport News High School, has been a three-year player for coach Michael Gardner at Heritage High School. During that span the Hurricanes have posted a 63-16 record.
Holston, a 5-11 wing forward, enters her final season having already put up impressive numbers for Heritage. She has scored 1,321 points (17.4), grabbed 873 rebounds (11.4) and has come up with 245 assists (3.1), 203 steals and 171 blocks.
She is a three-time first team all-district honoree, the reigning two-time district Player of the Year and has been selected both first and second team all-region.
During her junior year, Holston led Heritage to a 22-8 record and a spot in the state semifinal game. She was named honorable mention all-state after averaging 16.0 points and 10.6 rebounds per game.
In addition, Holston averaged 18.0 points and 12.0 boards as a sophomore and 19.0 points and 11.5 rebounds per game as a freshman.
“Bonae is hard-working kid that any coach would love to have,” said Heritage coach Michael Gardner. “She is an old school ball player that comes to work each and every day.”
