The NC State Women’s Basketball team has been selected No. 25 in the first USA Today/ESPN Coaches’ Poll of the 2007-08 season.
The Wolfpack joins four other ACC schools ranked among the top-25. Maryland comes in at No. 4, followed by North Carolina at No. 7, Duke at No. 9 and Florida State at No. 19.
The BIG EAST joins the ACC as the only conference with five of its institutions ranked among the nations best.
Others teams the Pack will play this season that received votes in the poll are Mississippi, Xavier, ACC rival Georgia Tech and Temple.
The Wolfpack return two starters, senior Khadijah Whittington and junior guard Shayla Fields, and eight letterwinners from last season’s club that posted a 25-10 record and reached the NCAA Sweet 16 for the 11th time in program history.
Whittington was tabbed for the preseason All-ACC Team last week. The Roanoke, Va., native led the league with 10.5 rebounds per game last year when she set a single-season school record with 366 total boards. She also led the Pack in scoring (10.5), steals (63) and blocks (49).
The first chance to see the new-look Wolfpack will be next Thursday, Nov. 7 against the Premier Players in an exhibition game at Reynolds Coliseum at 7 pm.
