Coach Yow To Drop Puck on Hockey Fights Cancer Night
10/22/2007 12:00:00 AM | Women's Basketball
RALEIGH, N.C. - NC State Women's Basketball Coach Kay Yow will be a part of a special ceremonial puck drop prior to Monday night's Carolina Hurricanes game against the Vancouver Canucks, as the Hurricanes hold Hockey Fights Cancer Night.
Yow, who was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2002, has won more than 700 games as a collegiate head coach, 651 of which have come during her 32 years at N.C. State. Yow has guided her teams to 20 NCAA Tournament appearances, five ACC regular-season titles and four ACC tournament titles.
During the 2006-07 season, Yow was forced to take a leave of absence because of progression in her breast cancer, which was originally diagnosed in 1987. She missed 16 games before returning to the bench in a Wolfpack win against rival Virginia on Jan. 26. Inspired by their coach, the Wolfpack went on to win 10 of their next 11 games, including Yow's 700th career victory and an upset of No. 2 North Carolina on Senior Night at Reynolds Coliseum, during which the court at Reynolds Coliseum was renamed "Kay Yow Court." Two weeks later, the Pack knocked off previously unbeaten and top-ranked Duke at the ACC Tournament.
Hockey Fights Cancer is a joint charitable initiative founded in December 1998 by the National Hockey League and National Hockey League Players' Association. It is supported by Players, NHL Member Clubs, NHL Alumni, the NHL Officials' Association, Professional Hockey Athletic Trainers and Equipment Managers, corporate marketing partners, broadcast partners and fans throughout North America. The goal of Hockey Fights Cancer is to raise money and awareness for national and local organizations involved in cancer care and research. To date, Hockey Fights Cancer has raised more than $9 million.
As part of Hockey Fights Cancer Night, the Hurricanes are offering fans an opportunity to purchase discounted tickets to the game, and a portion of the ticket price will go to support a local organization that focuses on fighting cancer. Up to $5 from each ticket purchased will go to one of the following organizations: The Jimmy V Foundation, St. Baldrick's, The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, The American Cancer Society, or Susan B. Komen for the Cure. Tickets are available in advance of Monday at the Time Warner Cable Box Office inside the RBC Center.
