No. 37 Pack Tops Seahawks, 7-0

Raleigh, N.C. – The No. 37 NC State men’s tennis team defeated UNC Wilmington, 7-0, on Sunday, Jan. 28 at the J.W. Isenhour Tennis Center on the NC State campus in Raleigh, N.C. The Pack collected two bouts to secure the doubles point, before grabbing all six singles decisions. With the win, NC State moves to 4-0 on the season, while UNCW slips to 1-1.
The Wolfpack got off to a hot start in tag-team play, dominating at No.1 and No. 3 to collect the doubles point. Junior’s Nick Cavaday and Ben Zink knocked off Gustavo Bertei and Henrique Meloni, 8-2, at No. 1, while senior Andre Iriarte and sophomore Jay Weinacker downed Brian Ford and Grant Holland, 8-3, at No. 3. Dennis Myers and Caio Piacentini lead from the start of play at No. 2 for the Seahawks, taking the match over senior William Noblitt and sophomore Christian Welte, 8-4.
Weinacker, who set the school’s single season win record last year with 23 victories, made a brilliant return at No. 3 singles. In a flawless performance, Weiancker defeated Holland, 6-2, 6-0, winning his return bout after sitting out a week ago. Cavaday, currently ranked No. 99 nationally in the Fila/Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) rankings, dropped Piacentini, 6-0, 6-4, at No. 1. At No. 2, Noblitt followed by downing Bertei, 6-2, 7-5, to guarantee the Pack’s fourth win of the young season.
With the match already in the bag, Welte topped Myers, 7-5, 2-6, 6-3, at No. 4, and Iriarte defeated Meloni, 6-1, 6-1, at No. 5. After dropping the front frame to Christopher Yee at No. 6, freshman Frideric Prandecki bounced back to grab the win, 4-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-5).
NC State returns to the courts later today with a 2:30 p.m. home match against the Winthrop Eagles. A match recap and complete scores will be available following the Pack's contest on GoPack.com shortly following the completion of competition.
