Raleigh, N.C. - The Wolfpack men's tennis team will host two matches on Sunday, Jan. 28, at the J.W. Isenhour Tennis Center on the NC State campus. The Pack, currently ranked No. 37 nationally in the Fila / Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) rankings, will host the UNC Wilmington Seahawks at 10 a.m., before taking on the Winthrop Eagles at 2:30 p.m. NC State enters the weekend at 3-0.
The Pack currently boasts two players ranking in singles for the first time in school history. Junior Nick Cavaday, ranked No. 99, was tabbed as the ACC Men's Tennis Player of the Week for his performance last week. Cavaday won two bouts at No. 1 singles and two more at No. 1 doubles, including a shutout of the No. 20 doubles tandem in the country, The Citadel's James Eason and Daniel Dossetor, with partner Ben Zink.
Sophomore Jay Weinacker, ranked No. 100, sat out the opening weekend for NC State, but will be in action on Sunday. Last season Weinacker set the school record for most singles victories in a single season with 23.
UNC Wilmington began their spring season on Friday, Jan. 26, with a 5-2 win at Davidson. Against the Wildcats, the Seahawks dropped all three doubles bouts before collecting five wins in singles play. Last season, the Pack downed the Seahawks, 5-2. NC State is 4-0 all-time against UNCW.
Sunday's bout will mark the first match of the year for Winthrop. The Eagles enter the 2007 season on the heels of an NCAA Tournament appearance last year. In fact, the Eagles and Pack both competed in the first round in Durham, N.C., on the Duke campus. The red and white fell to Boise State, while the Blue Devils upended the Eagles. Sunday's bout will mark the first-ever meeting between the two schools.
Match recaps and complete scores will be available following each of the Pack's two contests on GoPack.com shortly following the completion of each competition. Stay tuned to GoPack.com for all the latest news, updates and features on Wolfpack men's tennis.
