Raleigh, N.C. – After capturing its first-ever Atlantic Coast Conference softball championship a year ago, NC State has been tabbed the preseason favorite for 2007, as determined by a vote of the league’s eight head coaches. The Wolfpack topped the list, garnering seven of eight first-place votes and 62 points.
“It’s certainly something to be excited about,’’ head coach Lisa Navas said. “All of the teams in the league are starting over at 0-0 with a clean slate now and it’s going to be a tough race all season. I’ve said before, it’s not where you start, but where you finish.”
Sixteen letterwinners are back for the reigning ACC champion Wolfpack this year, including Louisville Slugger/National Fastpitch Coaches Association All-Region second-team pick and ACC tournament MVP Shaina Ervin. The pitcher from Huntersville, N.C., was instrumental in helping NC State claim its league championship in 2006 with a 4-1 win over Florida State in the title game. The Pack also made its first-ever appearance in the NCAA Tournament. Navas was named coach of the year last season in the ACC, while her staff picked up coaching staff of the year honors for the NFCA southeast region.
NC State also boasts top returnees in two-time All-ACC performer Jen Chamberlin, all-conference first-teamer Abbie Sims and all-tournament selections Miranda Ervin and Shanna Smith.
The Pack will begin its quest for a repeat performance at the Carolina Classic in Chapel Hill, N.C., Friday, Feb. 9 through Sunday, Feb. 11. The Pack will begin ACC play on Saturday, March 3, hosting Florida State in a doubleheader.
The 2007 ACC Softball Championship will take place May 11-13 in Tallahassee, Fla., with the Seminoles serving as the host.
