No. 37 Pack Takes Bite Out of Bulldogs, 6-1

Raleigh, N.C. – The No. 37 NC State men’s tennis team struck down visiting Gardner-Webb, 6-1, on Saturday, Jan. 20, at the J.W. Isenhour Tennis Center on the NC State campus in Raleigh, N.C. The Pack won the doubles point to open play and followed by collecting five of six singles decisions. With the victory, NC State moves to 2-0 on the season, while Gardner-Webb falls to 0-1.
Wolfpack fans held their breath for a brief moment during doubles, as the Bulldogs led late in play on all three courts. Gardner-Webb drew first blood at No. 1, as Taylor Ferrier and Roberto Vasques downed senior William Noblitt and sophomore Christian Welte, 8-6. Freshman Frideric Prandecki and junior David Rozek evened the score for NC State at No. 2, topping Evgeny Slesarev and Gabe Veiga, 8-5. With the doubles point hanging in the balance, graduate Daniel Schinke and senior Andre Iriarte fought from behind to force extra play against Kim Ellis and Grant Van Rensburg. With the score knotted at 7-7, the Pack duo grabbed two-consecutive tense sets to take the match, 9-7, and give NC State an early 1-0 lead.
Welte got the Pack started in singles with a win, 6-2, 6-3, over Vasques at No. 1, while junior Ben Zink followed over Ellis at No. 3, 6-3, 6-3. Iriarte then downed Slesarev, 6-3, 6-3, at No. 2 to secure NC State’s second victory on the season.
Prandecki, who dropped the first set at No. 4 to Ferrier, fought back to gain control of the match and win in a tiebreaker, 3-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-3). Rozek stumbled against Veiga at No. 5 after collecting the front frame, but held on to win in a tiebreaker, 6-4, 1-6, 1-0 (10-7). Schinke suffered the lone loss of the match after winning the first set over Van Rensburg at No. 6, 1-6, 7-5, 1-0 (10-7).
