Raleigh, N.C. - The NC State men's tennis team will begin the spring 2007 season ranked No. 37 nationally in the Fila Collegiate Tennis Rankings released by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA). In addition to the team's ranking, two players are both ranked in singles play for the first time in school history.
"We're obviously still building this program," said Choboy. "We had a lot of success last year, but at the end of the year, it's where you finish not where you begin."
The team ranking marks the Pack's highest spot ever at the beginning of the season. In 2006, NC State began the season at No. 45 nationally before going on to win 20 matches, make the NCAA Tournament field for the first time since 1999 and finish at No. 42.
Junior Nick Cavaday (No. 99) and sophomore Jay Weinacker (No. 100) both landed in the singles rankings, marking the first time ever that NC State has had two players ranked in singles at the same time.
"This is a great achievement for two guys that have worked hard," said Choboy. "It's also the first time that this program has ever had more than one guy ranked at one time, so that says a lot about where we're headed and where we've come from. That being said, we have a lot of work to do, but we are ready to get back to it."
Cavaday will enter the season playing the number one spot in singles. A native of Chislehurst, London, England, Cavaday has collected 26 wins at the top of the Pack's lineup in just two seasons. After breaking the Wolfpack record for singles victories in a season with 23 last year, Weinacker is looking to build on an extremely successful freshman season.
NC State's challenging spring schedule includes 10 matches against 2006 NCAA Tournament squads. When competition begins in January the Wolfpack will host its first 12 bouts within the friendly confines of the J.W. Isenhour Tennis Center on the NC State campus. The Pack will kick off the action on Saturday, Jan. 20, with contests against High Point, Gardner-Webb and the Citadel.
