Pack Successful On First Day of Home Tournament

Raleigh, N.C. - The NC State men’s tennis team won six of the seven matches it competed in during the first day of the Residence Inn North Wolfpack Invitational on Friday, Sept. 15, in Raleigh, N.C. The Pack collected four of five singles decisions, and won both of its doubles contests. Christian Welte won two singles matches, as well as two doubles bouts with partner Jay Weinacker.
In the Flight A Singles round of 32, David Rozek downed Campbell’s Artoym Starkov, 6-4, 6-0, as Welte knocked off Austin Fenn of Elon, 6-2, 6-2. In the round of 16, Welte trumped Campbell’s Vasja Gorjup, 6-2, 4-6, 6-3, while Weinacker downed Gustaf Asplund of Elon, 6-0, 6-4. Rozek fell to Elon’s Mason Schermerhorn, 7-6(2), 7-5.
Weinacker and Welte then went on to win two doubles matches in the Flight A Doubles bracket. In the round of 16, the pair topped Gabriel Delaru and Marc Sifre of Campbell, 8-5, before besting East Carolina’s Matt Peeler and Henrique Viana, 8-3, in the quarterfinals.
Play will continue tomorrow during the second day of the Residence Inn North Wolfpack Invitational.
