Wolfpack men's tennis head coach Jon Choboy announced the 2006-07 team schedule on Monday, Aug. 21, at the J.W. Isenhour Tennis Center on the NC State campus. The challenging slate includes nine fall tournaments and 10 matches against 2006 NCAA Tournament squads. The red and white will host its own tournament, the annual Residence Inn North Wolfpack Invitational, Sept. 15-17.
"We are excited to get back out on the courts and we look forward to another challenging year," said Choboy. "We have a new assistant coach, and we've brought in some quality tennis players. We're going to continue to work hard and make a name for this program."
NC State will kick off the season on Friday, Sept. 8 in Wilmington, N.C., at the UNC Wilmington Fall Invitational. The Pack will host its own tournament the following weekend, before hitting the road for fall invitational tournaments at Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Florida State and William and Mary. Additionally, the Pack will partake in the All-American Championships (Oct. 2-8) in Tulsa, Okla., and the ITA Mideast Regional (Oct. 18- 22) in Chapel Hill, N.C.
When spring play begins in January, the Wolfpack will host its first 12 bouts within the friendly confines of the J.W. Isenhour Tennis Center on the NC State campus. Last year the Pack won its first nine matches, including seven victories on its home turf. In all, the 2006 Pack posted a 15-2 home record.
Aside from the grueling ACC stretch, NC State will take on 14 non-conference opponents. Last season the Pack went 17-2 against non-ACC teams, boasting wins over four ranked challengers.
Eager to continue challenging his players against marquee programs, Choboy's schedule pairs the Pack against some heavily lauded opponents. In the spring, the team will take on 10 squads that made the NCAA Tournament last season: Winthrop, Louisville, Wake Forest, Virginia, Duke, North Carolina, Georgia Tech, Clemson, Florida State and Miami.
The 2006 NC State men's tennis team amassed a 20-11 record, reaching the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 1999. During the year, the Pack recorded a program-best 20 wins, defeating six ranked teams long the way, including two in the top-20. Three of the Pack's wins over ranked teams came on the road.
