RALEIGH, N.C. - Junior William Noblitt of the NC State men's tennis team was named to the 2006 All-ACC squad on Wednesday, April 19. The Shelby, N.C. native holds a 20-5 overall record going into the ACC Championships, highlighted by a 9-2 stint in league singles matches. His overall win total is second best on the team, while his ACC record stands as the squads benchmark for the season.
Noblitt marks the first team member to be named All-ACC since former teammate Conor Taylor collected the honor in 2004. He is the second player to enjoy the distinction during head coach Jon Choboy's four-year tenure at the helm of the program.
Lately Noblitt has been on a roll, winning his last eight decisions, including seven against conference opponents. In addition, 17 of his 20 wins have come in straight-sets. After carving a 4-0 mark in singles and doubles during the first week of spring play, Noblitt was named ACC Men's Tennis Co-Player of the Week for the week of Jan. 23.
In 2005, Noblitt produced a solid 18-5 spring record in singles play, leading the team with a 7-3 mark in conference work. He went 28-9 overall during the spring in singles action, while grabbing six doubles wins in ACC play with Mason Schermerhorn, tops on the team.
A key contributor in the 2004 lineup as a freshman, he posted a 3-1 mark in ACC doubles and won seven of the 16 dual singles matches he played, including two ACC matches. Noblitt also won three of his first four matches in singles, and finished the year with a total of 16 singles wins on the season.
NC State will hit the courts tomorrow, Thursday, April 20, as the No. 10 seed against No. 7 seed Clemson at the ACC Championships in Cary, N.C. The match is slated to begin at 12 p.m. at the Cary Tennis Center.
