NC State (16-9) couldn't overcome a strong pitching performance from All-American Monica Abbott (10-0) as the No. 2/3 Tennessee Volunteers (14-0) blanked the Wolfpack, 9-0. Abbott pitched a two hitter and fanned 12 batters, while three NC State pitchers allowed 13 hits and nine runs to the Volunteers. Shaina Ervin (3-2) allowed three earned runs on five hits over three innings to take the loss. Heather Gelbard and Tess Corona both singled for the Wolfpack offense.
The Vols scored a run in the top of the first after an infield single and stolen base by Sarah Feteke. Feteke reached third after her steal when the ball bounced into center field for an error. She came around to score on a sacrifice fly by Kristi Durant for a 1-0 Wolfpack lead.
NC State's first hit came in the fourth on a Gelbard single through the left side to lead off the inning and the Wolfpack down 4-0. Two strikeouts by Abbott and a popup ended the inning.
Corona flared a ball into right for a single of her own in the sixth with one out and moved to second on a Gelbard groundout. Shanna Smith grounded out to end the inning.
NC State returns to the field at 4 p.m. against Hofstra in the second game of the USF adidas Invitational in Clearwater, Fla.
