Illinois-Chicago Takes Out Wolfpack Softball, 6-3

Abbie Sims (10-5) allowed a career-high 12 hits as Illinois-Chicago (4-13) beat NC State, 6-3. The Wolfpack (18-10) rallied twice to pull within one run late in the game, but couldn't move ahead to drop to 2-2 in the USF adidas Invitational. Jen Chamberlin, Jennifer Patterson and Tess Corona each had RBIs for NC State in the loss.
Down two heading into NC State's half of the fourth inning, the offense put a run on the board as Shanna Smith singled into right field to lead off. Smith stole second and moved to third on a wild pitch. Jennifer Patterson grounded out to short to plate Smith and trim the lead to 2-1.
The Flames answered back with two runs in the fifth to push its lead to 4-1.
The Wolfpack trimmed the lead to 4-3 with a rally in the bottom half of the inning. Lisa Nentwig singled and moved to second on a wild pitch. Sims walked and Jen Chamberlin came in to pinch hit. Chamberlin singled up the middle to score Nentwig to reduce the lead to 4-2. Tess Corona followed with a RBI single up the middle to make it 4-3 and moved to second on the throw home. After Heather Gelbard walked with one out, Smith flied out and Miranda Ervin struckout to end the inning.
NC State would get no closer, as UIC scored two more in the top of the sixth on three singles for the final 6-3 margin.
