After securing a fifth-place finish in the ACC regular season standings, NC State (17-10, 7-7 ACC) will face the 12th-seeded Clemson Tigers (8-20, 2-12) at 4 p.m. on Thursday, March 2, in the 29th Annual Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament. NC State leads 9-4 after 13 previous meetings with Clemson in the ACC Tournament. The Wolfpack is 32-24 all-time in the ACC Tournament since 1978.
"This has been the most competitive season within the ACC from top to bottom," said NC State head coach Kay Yow. "Seeding for teams five through 12 went right down to the wire. On any given night every team is capable of beating another. It makes for a great tournament for fans to watch. It's a little ironic for us to play Clemson after having played them just once during the regular season and to face a former player as a head coach (Cristy McKinney) twice in one season. I hadn't considered that would happen this year. I know Clemson, as with all of the teams, will be fired up. For us to come out a winner, we will have to have a really great game. We have no margin of error in the ACC."
NC State defeated Clemson on its home court back on Feb. 16, 78-69 and owns an all-time record of 43-27 over the Tigers. The Pack last faced Clemson in the tournament on March 6, 2004, in the quarterfinals and won, 45-43 to advance to the semifinals.
The Wolfpack finished the regular season winning four of its last five games and six of its last 10. NC State capped the 2005-06 ACC slate with an 82-71 upset win at No. 17 Boston College on Friday, Feb. 24.
"We are happy to end up with a 7-7 record after getting ourselves in somewhat of a hole early on in the schedule," commented Yow. The team did a great job coming back and securing fifth place among the conference teams. Hopefully we can continue to build on that momentum and success."
A win over Clemson would pit NC State against the fourth-seeded Florida State Seminoles (18-8, 9-4 ACC). The Wolfpack has never met FSU in the ACC Tournament. The quarterfinal game is set for 4 p.m. on Friday, March 3.
All games are slated to take place in the Greensboro Coliseum in Greensboro, N.C.
