NC State ended a three-game losing streak with a convincing 73-60 win over Wake Forest on Thursday evening. The game will mark the 25th all-time meeting in Reynolds Coliseum between the Pack and the Yellow Jackets and 54th all-time tip-off. With the win on Thursday, NC State is 10-2 at home and 3-2 in ACC games in Reynolds. Senior Billie McDowell is leading the Pack in conference scoring with her 11.8 ppg, while junior guard Ashley Key is gaining quickly after posting double figures in scoring that last three games and four of the last five. She is netting 11.5 ppg after 10 ACC contests. Senior Tiffany Stansbury remains the team's overall scoring leader with 13.1 ppg. About the Wolfpack (14-9, 4-6 ACC)
After allowing its last four opponents to win the battle on the boards, the Wolfpack finally got on board and did the job. NC State grabbed five more rebounds than Wake Forest on Thursday night. The positive margin has come just twice in 10 conference games this season. With that being said, NC State's backcourt has been performing well the last two games. The trio of Ashley Key, Marquetta Dickens and Billie McDowell has been dropping in double figure scoring performances and playing well defensively. Against Florida State and Wake Forest, they have combined to score 69 of the Pack's 134 points, grab 35 of the 76 rebounds and make 16 of the 28 assists. In addition to Key's three-straight double figure scoring games, she has posted an assist:turnover ratio of 2.00 in that stretch and tallied five consecutive games with fewer turnovers than assists. Defensively, NC State continues to hold opponents to less than 40 percent from the floor and is forcing nearly 19 miscues a game.
About Georgia Tech (13-10, 2-8 ACC)
Georgia Tech is on a two-game road trip and began it with a loss at No. 21 Boston College, 57-55 on Thursday night. Chioma Nnamaka, the team's leading scorer with 12.2 ppg, scored 25 in the loss and had six rebounds, but finished with five turnovers and zero assists. GT shot just 39.7 percent from the floor and had just one other player, Jill Ingram reach double figures with her 11 points. Janie Mitchell leads the team in rebounding with 7.2 rpg, while Ingram is dishing out 3.04 apg. The loss marked the third-straight for GT and fourth of five games. The squad has ACC wins over Clemson and Wake Forest and will close out its conference slate with games against Virginia Tech at home and on the road at Virginia and Miami.
NC State in the ACC
With the Atlantic Coast Conference owning the nation's top RPI, NC State can say it has helped significantly. The Wolfpack is one of three ACC schools in the Top 10 RPI (UNC 2nd, Duke 4th and NC State 10th). NC State's strength of schedule leads all ACC schools and is ranked first in the nation. NC State also finished its non-conference slate with a 10-3 record, with two of those losses coming to ranked teams (No. 6 Rutgers and No. 22 Utah). That winning percentage of 76.9 improved the ACC's overall non-conference winning percentage to 82.3 percent on the year. The Pack is 4-6 against ACC opponents this season, having lost to then No. 4 North Carolina and again as the No. 1 ranked team, then No. 2 Duke, at Wake Forest, No. 23 Boston College at home and at Florida State. NC State is currently seventh in the ACC standings.
