Wolfpack Women sign Five for Class of 2007

RALEIGH, N.C. NC State women’s basketball coach Kay Yow announced Wednesday that five student-athletes have signed National Letters of Intent on the first day of the early signing period.
Yow announced the commitments of forwards Tia Bell, Gloria Brown and Brittany Strachan (pronounced Strawn), center Hanna Halterman and guard Emili Tasler. All Star Girls Report ranks the Wolfpack the 18th best class in the nation.
“We’re very pleased with this group of recruits in this fall signing period,” said Yow. “We felt like we had to fill some immediate needs following the graduation of six seniors this coming spring.”
“The combination of more size on the perimeter as well as depth in the post will enable us to continue to have a balanced attack,” added Yow. “This group of signees brings us a total package of skill, character and academic prowess.”
Bell, a 6-3 wing forward from Washington, D.C., is the No. 20-ranked player nationally at her position by All-Star Girls Report. In addition, the H. D. Woodson High School product is ranked a four-star recruit and the 67th overall player in the class of 2007 by Scout.com.
Street & Smith named Bell a Preseason Honorable Mention All-American for the upcoming season. Bell was the 2006 Gatorade D.C. Player of the Year, the DCIAA Player of the Year and was named third team All-Met by the Washington Post after averaging 20.2 points, 10.4 rebounds, 5.0 assists and 2.0 blocks per game last year.
She was named first team All-DCIAA East Division the past two seasons and also named All-District by the Washington Post in 2005. Bell was named to the All-Tournament team at the prestigious 3-point Play Tournament.
The Honor Roll student posted single-game highs of 37 points as a junior, while also coming up with 10 blocks in a game as a sophomore.
Brown, who hails from Philadelphia, Pa., is ranked as the No. 9 power forward and the 43rd overall player in the class of 2007 by All-Star Girls Report. The 6-2 forward out of Newman-Goretti High School was named first team Philadelphia All-Catholic, third team All-Southeastern Pennsylvania and Philadelphia All-Area the last two years during her sophomore and junior seasons. She was also the MVP of the Philadelphia Catholic League All-Star Game as a junior. She averaged 20 points, 15 rebounds and five blocks per game last season.
As a freshman, Brown was named first team Philadelphia All-Public School in 2004. She has compiled 1,289 points (17.7), 987 rebounds (13.5) and 363 blocked shots (4.9) in her three-year high school career.
Strachan, a 6-3 power forward from Kernersville, N.C., is the No. 20-ranked power forward in the class of 2007 by All-Star Girls Report. The Carver High School product was named the Piedmont Triad Conference 3A Player of the Year in 2006 after averaging 16.8 points and over 10.0 rebounds per game.
Strachan has been selected to the All-Conference team the last three years and was named All-Northwest Region by the Winston-Salem Journal in both 2005 and 2006.
She has averaged 15.8 points, 8.6 rebounds and 2.0 blocks per game in her career and has shot over 40.0 percent from the 3-point line in her career. In the process, she has led Carver to a 77-10 record the last three seasons and twice led them to the regional semifinals in the state playoffs.
Stratchan was also named the MVP at the Junior Olympics this past summer in Hampton Roads, Va. after leading her North Carolina AAU team to the championship title with an undefeated record.
In the classroom, Stratchan begins her senior year with the top grade point average in her class.
Halteman, a 6-4 center out of Pottstown, Pa., has been named All-Conference the last two years at Owen J. Roberts High School. She averaged 13.0 points, eight rebounds, two blocks and two steals per game last year and was named All-Area by The Mercury newspaper.
Tasler, a 5-8 guard and local product of Apex, N.C., led her Apex High School team to a 28-2 record and a place in the 4A state title game last year in 2006, which was held at was named All-Tri-Six Conference and to the All-Region team last season after averaging 11.0 points, six rebounds and five assists per game.
This class follows up last year’s 2006 class that ranked 9th overall by Scout.com and 10th by Blue Star Reports. If you combine the two classes, NC State’s roster will feature five players that were ranked in the top-70 overall by All Star Girls Report.
