NC State returns home to begin six-game home stand
The Wolfpack Women begin a stretch of six consecutive home games Wednesday night when South Carolina arrives in Raleigh for a 7 pm tip-off at Reynolds Coliseum.
Road Weary
It's been 20 days since NC State has played at the friendly confines of Reynolds Coliseum. Although, the Pack did play one of its last four games in Raleigh, but it took place at the RBC Center.
NC State is coming off a road trip that, according to "how the crow flies", the team traveled 4,798 miles between its stops in Tucson, Ariz. and Santa Barbara, Calif. from Nov. 23-27.
The Wolfpack also traveled a mere 1,100 miles to and from West Lafayette, Ind. to take on Purdue in the semifinals of the Preseason WNIT on November 12.
20 Straight Non-Conference Wins at Reynolds
NC State extended its non-conference winning streak at Reynolds Coliseum to 20 games with a 59-34 win over Iona on November 12. The Pack has gone the last three plus seasons without a non-conference loss at Reynolds.
The last setback was a 69-57 loss to Brigham Young on December 14, 2002.
Fields of Dreams
To say that sophomore guard Shayla Fields leads the team in scoring through five games is a surprise would be an understatement. It's actually almost amazing considering how little she played last year as a freshman.
Fields tied her career and season-high with 17 points in a 68-66 overtime loss at Arizona on November 24. Fields, who is averaging 11.2 points per game, has set career highs in every statistical category this year. The Salisbury, N.C. native entered the year having scored only three points during her freshman season. She has tossed in 67 points all ready this year.
She also tops the ACC by connecting on 55.6 percent (10-of-18) of her 3-point attempts.
Adding the 3-ball to its Arsenal
NC State was deadly from behind the arc during its two-game road swing out West. The team combined to shoot 54.2 percent (13-for-24) in the two games.
At Arizona, the Pack canning a season-high 10 3-pointers in 19 attempts. It marked the most trey's made by the Pack in its last 21 games, dating back to January 13, 2005 when NC State hit on 10 3's against Virginia.
NC State was more stingy with its attempts (5) on Sunday against UC Santa Barbara, but connected on three of its shots
The Wolfpack only had 14 3-pointers in its first four games of the 2006-07 season.
Turning the Corner
Interim head coach Stephanie Glance said in the postgame press conference after the UCSB game that, "hopefully we have turned the corner", after a brilliant second half that saw NC State shoot 54.8 percent (17-31) from the floor, which erased a seven-point deficit at halftime.
The 54.8 percent shooting percentage was far and away the best the Pack has posted in a half of basketball this year. The club also took care of the ball with only five turnovers in the second half, while also picking up 20 of its 24 points in the paint after the intermission.
KD leads ACC in Rebounding
Junior forward Khadijah Whittington currently leads the ACC in rebounds with 11.7 per game and defensive rebounds with 8.0 per game.
The Roanoke, Va native has compiled four double-digit rebounding totals in the six games played. She has two double-doubles this year and is one of only two players currently averaging a double-double with 11.2 points and 11.7 rebounds per game. Corinne Groves of Wake Forest is also averaging a double-double.
