CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. -- For the ninth time in school history, NC State claimed both the men's and women's ACC Cross Country Championships on Saturday.
Senior Julia Lucas won the women's individual title in a time of 20:42.1 in the 6,000-meter race, with teammates Bona Jones (4th), Brittany Tinsley (9th) and Angelina Blackman (13th) joining her with ACC honors. In winning the school's 20th outright ACC title in the 29-year history of ACC women's cross country, the women scored 59 points to take the title, with two-time defending champion Duke finishing second.
Lucas' title now gives NC State 21 individual women's championships in ACC history. Jones, who finished the race at 21:12.7, was named the ACC Women's Freshman of the Year.
The Wolfpack women have won a total of 21 ACC titles, including a share of the 2002 championship with Wake Forest.
The Wolfpack men blew away the field in their 8,000-meter race, placing eight runners in the Top 20. Fifth-year senior Wesley Smith was the Wolfpack's top finisher, coming in fourth place. He was followed closely by Tibor Vegh in fifth, John Crews in sixth, Gavin Coombs in ninth, Bryce Ruiz in 13th, Chris Kollar in 18th and Fredy Torres in 19th.
It's the first time since 2002 that the men and women have won both titles in the same year. NC State is the only school in conference history to win both the men's and women's title in the same year.
