Tulsa, Okla. – William Noblitt, James McGee and Jay Weinacker each won singles matches at the 2006 Polo Ralph Lauren All-American Championships in Tulsa, Okla., on Monday, Oct. 2. Weinacker and McGee both toppled nationally ranked opponents, with both Wolfpack netters winning in three set marathons. Noblitt was victorious in two sets.
Weinacker won his fourth match in three days by defeating fellow ACC foe Josh Cohen of Miami. Cohen, ranked No. 54 nationally in the Fila Collegiate Tennis Rankings preseason poll, stands as the first ranked opponent to fall at the hands of the sophomore phenomenon. Last year Weinacker set the school’s single season solo win record with 23 victories as a freshman.
Noblitt followed Weinacker’s performance with a solid effort of his own, downing Western Michigan’s Tim Bradshaw in straight sets, 7-6(4), 6-3, after fighting through a tough front frame. McGee wrapped up play for the evening by besting No. 80 Jeremy Sonkin of Wisconsin, 6-3, 1-6, 6-3.
Noblitt, McGee and Weinacker will resume singles play at the event tomorrow, Tuesday, Oct. 3. In addition to the solo showdowns, Weinacker and McGee will compete in doubles play, while Noblitt will pair with teammate Nick Cavaday.
