COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Maryland jumped out of the chute by winning the first seven matches of the night and eight of 10 overall, hammering NC State 28-6 in Atlantic Coast Conference wrestling action at the Comcast Pavillion. Maryland improved to 2-7 on the season, 1-0 in the ACC, while NC State dropped to 6-2 and 0-1.
James Knox got Maryland started in the dual with a 5-2 win over Jeremy Hartrum at 125 pounds. After a scoreless first period, Knox started the second on top and managed to turn Hartrum to his back for three near fall points. Knox was able to build his riding time in the process, and despite being penalized for stalling in the third period, won the bout 5-2.
Brendan Byrne's first period takedown stood up as the only offensive points of the match as he edged Garrett Cummings, 3-2, at 133 pounds. The Terps then extended their lead to 11-0 in the dual after Alex Krom controlled his bout with Jalil Dozier at 141 pounds. Krom pounced on Dozier early with a takedown that he nearly converted for a fall in the first minute of action. He added two more near fall points in the first for a 7-0 lead. Krom continued to be in charge the rest of the way and ended up amassing more than four minutes of riding time on his way to a 15-0 technical fall.
Andrew Schlaffer kept Maryland on a roll with a 4-1 win over Joe Caramanica at 149 pounds, pushing the Terps' lead to 14-0. With Schlaffer holding a 2-1 lead late in the match, Caramanica was on top trying to turn Schlaffer for the victory. However, as time was expiring, Schlaffer scored the reverse for the win.
Despite surrendering the first takedown of the match, Adam James scored two takedowns, two escapes and racked up more than three minutes of riding time on his way to a 7-2 victory over Bryant Reams at 157 pounds. The win made the score 17-0 in favor of Maryland at the intermission.
The Terps kept rolling after the break as Adam DeCosmo earned a 7-4 decision over Obie Simpson. DeCosmo gave up a takedown in the first period, but countered with a reversal for a 2-2 first period. He then scored an escape and a takedown for the 5-2 lead heading into the final period. Simpson rallied in the third with a reversal, but DeCosmo managed the escape and earned the riding time point to preserve the victory.
Dominic Buckman made the score 23-0 with a 4-0 win over Rick Brownlee at 174 pounds. After a scoreless first, Buckman rode Brownlee out in the second. He then started the third period with an escape and notched a takedown with 18 seconds left for the win.
The Wolfpack finally got on the board in the 184-pound match as Jeremy Colbert edged Luke Stauffer, 4-3. Trailing 3-2 late in the third period, Colbert managed a takedown with 14 seconds left to take the victory.
The Terps got back on the winning track at 197 pounds as Jerry Afari picked up bonus points with his 23-7 technical fall over Josh Collins. Afari nearly scored the fall in the first period, but settled for a pair of three-point near fall counts and two takedowns to take control of the bout. He scored six takedowns and two reversals and held nearly three minutes of riding time for his first technical fall of the season.
The Wolfpack's Jainor Palma closed the dual with a win as he defeated Bryan Reiss, 11-5. Trailing 5-2 in the third, Reiss rallied with a takedown, but Palma proved to be too much the rest of the way scoring two more takedowns in the period.
