GENEVA, Ohio – Competing with Wolfpack RTC, Matty Singleton won the U23 Freestyle Nationals at 79 kg by defeating Daschle Lamer in straight bouts in a best-of-three finals series.
A back-to-back defending ACC Champion for NC State wrestling, Matty Singleton became a freestyle national champion at 79 kg at the U23 nationals tournament last weekend while competing with the Wolfpack RTC. Coached by members of the NC State staff, with Zack Esposito, Hayden Hidlay, and Malik McDonald, Singleton was able to take the national title in just two bouts in a best-of-three finals.
Singleton defeated Oregon State's Daschle Lamer, who claimed the PAC-12 title at 174 pounds back in March. In the first match of the finals, Singleton was able to win by technical fall 11-0 in just under three and a half minutes and then won again in the second round by an 11-5 decision.
Two other upperweight members of the Pack, Jake Dailey (86 kg) and Patrick Brophy (92 kg), also competed in the U23 nationals tournament. Brophy reached the quarterfinals after defeating Tucker Hogan and George Rhodes, while Daily recorded a win over Gavin Hannah in the opening round of 64.
The same event also featured the U20 Freestyle World Team Trials which Will Denny (74 kg) and Cason Howle (97 kg) competed in. Howle was able to reach the finals before being eliminated by defeating Thomas Reilly and Robert Platt.
