RALEIGH, N.C. - While holding out a number of runners and contemplating redshirt seasons, the NC State cross country teams have maintained lofty spots in the national rankings through the first two weeks of the 2005 season.
The FinishLynx/NCAA Division I women's poll, released September 26, has NC State at No. 9, while the Mondo NCAA-I men's poll has the Wolfpack men at No. 18.
The Wolfpack has participated in two races this season, the 5K adidas Raleigh Invitational on September 17, and in the University races at the Great American Cross Country Festival on September 24. The men's race at the Great American was an 8K race, while the women's race was a 5K event.
The Wolfpack men took an easy victory at the Raleigh Invitational against minimal competition, then cruised at the Great American University race, which was a "B" race, albeit against a deeper field. Despite holding out several runners or having them run unattached, the Wolfpack women finished a solid second to 12th-ranked Wake Forest at the Raleigh Invitational, then came in a strong second to sixth-ranked Brigham Young in the University race at the Great American festival.
The Wolfpack will be off for two weeks leading up to the NCAA Pre-National Meet, October 15 at Terre Haute, Ind.
