RALEIGH, N.C. - With rivals Wake Forest and Duke running many of their front-line runners, NC State lined up a group of its younger and less experienced women athletes Saturday at the Raleigh Invitational Cross Country Meet in Cary, and came in a respectable second place.
Wake Forest, running most of its starting lineup, won the team score with 18 points, but the Wolfpack came in second behind strong performances from redshirt-sophomore Georgia Davis (6th placce), redshirt-junior Jessica Durrant (8th) and redshirt-sophomore Jessie Yester (9th). Redshirt-freshman Danielle Boucher came in 11th for the Pack, redshirt-sophomore Jennifer Boyd was 13th. In addition, junior Elena Helmerick ran unattached and took 10th place. The Wolfpack finished with 45 points. Duke was third with 70.
"Most of the athletes we ran today are primarily middle-distance runners or athletes who had injury problems last year," associate head coach Laurie Henes said. "I really thought Georgia, Jessica and Jessie ran well. This gives them some solid race experience as we head into the rest of the season."
The women will compete again next Saturday, September 24, in the Great American Cross Country Championships, also at the SAS Complex.
