NC State Men Run Strong Race At Raleigh Invitational

RALEIGH, N.C. - With most of its front-line runners on the sidelines, NC State still easily cruised to a first-place finish Saturday in the men's college race at the Raleigh Invitational Cross Country Meet at the SAS Complex in Cary.
NC State runners took first, second, third and sixth place, and a fourth Wolfpack runner, running unaffiliated, came in fourth. Redshirt-junior Phillip Stafford won the 5K race in a time of 15:31, with redshirt-freshman Eric Mack second at 15:34, and redshirt-senior John Henderson third at 15:40. Freshman Robert Bedsole ran unaffiliated and took fourth place with a time of 15:43. Redshirt-freshman Fredy Torres was sixth at 15:48.
"I was especially pleased with the way that first group of rurnners performed," NC State head coach Rollie Geiger said. "Phillip Stafford ran a very good race. As a team, this was really kind of a tuneup, and a chance for some of our younger athletes to get some race experience. We asked the guys to average about five minutes a mile, and they did that. They also ran well together for the most part, which is something we wanted them to do."
In the four-team standings, NC State took first place with 18 points, followed by St. Augustine's with 49, North Carolina A&T with 64, and Shaw with 85.
NC State will race again next Saturday in the Great American Cross Country Country Championships, which also will be held at the SAS Complex in Cary.
