After hosting the first basketball game on Dec. 2, 1949, it is only inevitable that Reynolds Coliseum, now entering its 57th year of basketball action, would need some improvements. After taking a short hiatus from construction progress which began back in April, Reynolds Coliseum improvements are back on track. The building, specifically its athletic components, is currently undergoing renovations that include new locker rooms, administrative offices, women's basketball offices, athletic training room, strength and conditioning area, new court construction, equipment room and also new classrooms after a fire took out two rooms used for media hospitality. After having to refrain from taking photos of the construction areas due to the fire closure, tracking the progress is back in motion.
The basement of Reynolds now houses a new transformer, which was replaced after the old model caused the fire back in May. In addition, the athletic training room, locker rooms and strength and conditioning area has been demolished. Most of the walls have been taken down and are being reposition and replaced. New plumbing is being installed as well to accommodate shower areas and training room needs. New walls are being put up to frame in the new rooms for offices and team locker room space. The women's basketball offices have walls and windows and the arena is being prepped to lay down the new floor for volleyball, wrestling, gymnastics and women's basketball. Head women's basketball coach Kay Yow now has her banners celebrating the program's many milestones hung among the new arena lights which line the upper coliseum sides running the length of the court.
Construction will continue throughout the summer and into early fall.
Photos will be placed on gopack.com as the improvements continue.
