NC State distance runner John Henderson was selected by The College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) to the 2005 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America University Division Track & Field/Cross Country Team. Henderson picks up second team Academic All-America honors to go with his first-team Academic All-District III honors awarded earlier this month.
Henderson, a rising senior from Hendersonville, N.C., has a 4.00 grade point average in Mathematics Education. He helped the men's cross country team to its fourth straight ACC Championship, a District III Championship and 16th place at the NCAA Championship this past fall. Henderson competed in the 5,000m at the ACC Indoor Track & Field Championships and placed fifth in the steeplechase at ACC Outdoors with a NCAA Regional Championship qualifying time. He finished 13th in the steeplechase at the 2004 ACC Outdoor Track & Field Championships and placed seventh in 2003. An ACC Honor Roll member and an NC State scholar-athlete, Henderson is a Dean's List student as well. He was also named to NC State's 2005 top 10 scholar athlete list.
In order to be eligible for Academic All-America honors, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale), must be a starter or an important reserve and be in at least their second season of athletic and academic eligibility at their current school. The complete list of the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America teams will eventually be posted at www.cosida.com.
