RALEIGH, N.C. - Former Wolfpack standout Andrea Stinson has signed with the WNBA's Detroit Shock after spending eight seasons with the Charlotte Sting, a period of time that began with the league's inaugural season in 1997. She is one of 11 players in the league still remaining from the WNBA's first season, and is the third leading scorer in the history of the league. The 5-11 shooting guard spent the first eight years of her career with the Charlotte Sting, earning All-Star nods during the 2000, 2001 and 2002 seasons and finishing as the runner up in MVP balloting during the 1997 season to Houston's Cynthia Cooper.
"After winning a championship in Turkey this offseason, I can't think of anything better than coming to Detroit and helping the Shock win another title," said Stinson by phone from Turkey. "Playing in front of my family and friends in Charlotte [Stinson's hometown] for the first eight years of my career was truly a blessing, but as of today, I'm a member of the Detroit Shock, and I plan on taking every advantage of the opportunity.
"Whatever Coach Laimbeer and the coaching staff ask of me, I'm ready to give them. If that means coming off the bench, running the break, playing defense, trying to teach some of the younger players what I've learned in my years in professional basketball, whatever it is, I'm going to give them."
Stinson's name can be found among nearly every major career statistical category in the 2005 Official WNBA Guide & Register. In addition to her third-place ranking in scoring she is second in minutes played, fifth in assists, seventh in steals and 13th in rebounding, She also shares the league record with Teresa Weatherspoon for consecutive games played, and is alone atop the list of consecutive games started in WNBA history.
During Stinson's eight seasons in purple and teal, she led the Sting to the playoffs on six occasions and to the WNBA Finals in 2001.
Currently, NC State has five former players in the WNBA ranks. Trudi Lacey, is in her third season as head coach of the Charlotte Sting. And joining Stinson in the ranks are Tynesha Lewis, a five-year veteran now in her third year with the Charlotte Sting, and Chasity Melvin (7-year vet) and Kaayla Chones (2-year vet), both with the Washington Mystics.
