RALEIGH, N.C. - In the second game of a doubleheader between NC State and Elon at the Walnut Creek Softball Complex, Elon (21-17) escaped with the 1-0 win, despite a three-hitter from Shaina Ervin (11-10) as she didn't allow an earned run in the game. The Wolfpack (31-19) managed three hits of its own, with Miranda Ervin, Jennifer Patterson and Allison Cuculich hitting singles in the game. Shaina Ervin struck out five and walked three, while Elon's Whitney Meeks (7-5) shut out the Wolfpack for just the ninth time this season.
Elon took a 1-0 lead on an unearned run in the sixth, as Paige Goss reached on a fielder's choice and advanced to third on an error by the Wolfpack shortstop Shanna Smith. Smith couldn't corral a grounder by Megan Borgaard, and Goss' heads up base running moved her to third with one out. Sadie Ball hit a sinking liner in front of Smith, as her RBI groundout scored Goss from third.
NC State rallied in the seventh, as Miranda Ervin roped a single to center field and Caroline Blount came in to run. Jennifer Patterson was hit by a pitch to put two on with no outs. Shaina Ervin laid down a perfect bunt, but the ball hit her out of the box and she was called out. Allison Cuculich popped up to second to bring Ashleigh Davis to the plate. Both runners advanced on a passed ball, before Whitney Meeks (7-5) struck out Davis to end the game.
