The Wolfpack (31-21, 2-5 ACC) put some early pressure on the No. 21 Yellow Jackets (37-9, 8-2 ACC) in the first game of a conference doubleheader on Apr. 9, as Ga. Tech won 4-0. Tech took game two, 9-2, despite two RBIs and a 2-for-3 performance from Miranda Ervin. Shaina Ervin (11-11) took the loss for NC State in the second game, while Brooke Isley (4-2) lost game one. The two teams will return to action in the third game of the series at noon on Sunday, Apr. 10 in Atlanta, Ga.
NC State jumped on Jessica Sallinger (19-6) early in game one, with Heather Gelbard drawing a walk in a nine pitch at-bat to lead off the game. Shanna Smith followed with a hard single through the right side to advance Gelbard to third with Smith moving to second on the throw. Sallinger settled in and struck out the Pack's 3-4-5 hitters in order to end the threat.
NC State's Brooke Isley (4-2) started strong, retiring the top of the Ga. Tech lineup in order in the first. She allowed a leadoff single to start the second inning, and a Sims error on the ball allowed the Tech batter Savannah Brown to advance to third. Amy Hoiser hit a RBI single to right as Brown scored unearned for a 1-0 Yellow Jackets lead.
For the game, Isley allowed nine hits while striking out six Tech batters. She walked three and allowed four runs - three earned - in the loss.
Ga. Tech put a second run on the board in the third on a lead off single off of Isley's leg and a RBI triple by Caitlin Lever for a 2-0 lead. Isley then retired the next three batters to strand Lever at third.
The lead would move to 3-0 in the fifth after Lever laid down a bunt single down the first base line before stealing second. Christine Sheridan doubled past a diving Blair Harkey in center to drive in Lever.
A hard infield chopper scored the fourth run of the game in the sixth for Ga. Tech as the won the first game behind Sallinger's 12 strikeouts and three hits allowed.
In the second game of a twin bill, Shaina Ervin lasted just three innings and allowed 10 hits and seven runs - six earned - while walking three and striking out two. Megan Dalthorp came in to pitch in relief, and threw the last three innings, allowing six hits and two runs. Ga. Tech's Sarah Wood improved to 11-2 on the season with the game two win by striking out five and allowing four hits, two runs and a walk.
The Yellow Jackets scored runs in the first four innings, including four in the fourth to take a 9-1 lead. Brown hit her third home run in the year, as her shot to right field skimmed over the wall in the four-run fourth. Harkey scored the first run for NC State in the game in the third, as she made it to second on a Georgia Tech error to start the inning. With two outs, Miranda Ervin had the first of two RBIs for NC State, as she singled to bring in Harkey from third after she reached the base on a wild pitch.
Miranda Ervin doubled in Shanna Smith in the fifth on her second two-out hit of the game for the second Wolfpack run and for a final 9-2 advantage for Ga. Tech.
