WILMINGTON, N.C. - Despite holding UNC Greensboro to four hits, NC State fell 2-0 to the Spartans (4-11) in the second game for the Wolfpack (17-8) on Saturday at the Seahawk Classic. NC State got six hits and drew four walks, but stranded 11 as it was shut out for only the fourth time this season. Shaina Ervin (6-5) struck out nine, but walked six batters for NC State. The loss snapped a six game win streak for the Wolfpack.
Heather Gelbard went 2-for-4 to lead the Wolfpack offense.
UNC Greensboro took an early 1-0 lead on a solo home run by Gwen Johnson in the first inning. The Spartans put two more runners on base with a walk and an error in the second, but Shaina Ervin struck out Pierce and got Oakes to ground out to end the threat.
UNC Greensboro added on another run off of a single to left field that dropped in. Hasper tracked the tailing ball off of the bat, and almost made an over-the-shoulder grab. Johnson scored from second after walking and stealing second.
NC State wouldn't go away, putting runners on in every inning, but leaving a total of 11, including at least one each inning, on base. NC State left a runner in scoring position in the last three innings, including the bases loaded in the seventh.
Reneé LaCroix and Heather Gelbard singled to lead off the top of the seventh, and Abbie Sims would reach on an error to load the bases with one out. Chamberlin reached on a fielder's choice, with LaCroix narrowly getting gunned down at home. Jennifer Patterson came in to pinch hit, but she popped up to the second baseman to end the game.
