WILMINGTON, N.C. - Behind another strong pitching performance by Abbie Sims, and yet another clutch base hit by Jennifer Patterson, NC State softball improved to 18-8 on the season with a 3-0 win over Appalachian State (7-13). The Wolfpack scored three runs on two hits and two Mountaineers' errors as Sims (8-3) was near flawless, allowing just four base runners in her fifth shutout of the season. Patterson hit a two-run single with one out in the fifth to give NC State the final margin.
Sims has allowed just one run in her last five starts, going 4-0 with two shutouts in her last two starts. She fell short of the minimum requirement of innings in her other win, pitching four innings of one hit ball in a five inning win over Delaware St. on Saturday.
NC State put the first run on the board in the second, despite never recording a base hit. Jen Chamberlin drew a leadoff walk, and Ashleigh Davis came in to run. Davis stole second, and moved to third as the Appalachian St. shortstop dropped the ball on the play at second. Shanna Smith hit a sacrifice fly to right field to drive in Davis for the 1-0 lead.
Appalachian St. catcher Gough doubled in the fourth with two outs, but Sims struck out Hurt to end the threat. Appalachian St. pitcher Hurley (0-6) had a no-hitter going until the sixth, when NC State tacked on two insurance runs.
Miranda Ervin was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning, and Beth Poore came in to run. Smith laid down a flawless sacrifice bunt, and was safe on an error from the second baseman. She advanced to second, with Poore moving to third on the play.
Patterson pinch hit for Tess Corona, and smacked a single over the shortstop's glove to drive in Poore and Smith for a two-run single. Patterson hit a pinch hit walk-off RBI single on Tuesday night against Campbell at Walnut Creek.
Sims was named to the Seahawk Classic Tournament team for her play over the weekend.
NC State softball will travel to Charlotte for a doubleheader on Tuesday, Mar. 1, then head to Greeneville, N.C. for the ECU Tournament this Friday and Saturday.
