Wolfpack Hosts Doubleheader Against Campbell
Coming off of a 2-3 record over the weekend at the FAU Classic in Boca Raton, Fla., NC State (12-7) softball will host the Campbell Fighting Camels (10-5) in a doubleheader on Tuesday, Feb. 22. The doubleheader starts with game one at 4 p.m., with the nightcap scheduled for a 6 p.m. start at the Walnut Creek Softball Complex.
FAU Classic Ends With A Bang
NC State's offense came alive in the final game of the FAU Classic in Boca Raton, Fla. on Sunday, Feb. 20, as the Wolfpack routed the Scarlet Knights of Rutgers, 10-0. NC State pounded out six extra-base hits, including three doubles from Jennifer Patterson. For the weekend, NC State outscored its opponents by a narrow 15-14 margin, and lost a close 3-0 decision to No. 8 Michigan in the opener. The Wolfpack snapped a five-game skid with a 3-0 win over Rutgers on Saturday, as Shaina Ervin evened her record at 4-4 with the five-hit shutout.
Patterson's Play Pays Off With Record Game
Sophomore catcher Jennifer Patterson came into Sunday's game against Rutgers with zero career doubles and 10 RBIs in 97 plate appearances. After the game with the Scarlet Knights, Patterson added three doubles and a five-RBI performance, both school records, in a 10-0 win at the FAU Classic. Her five RBIs tied the school record set earlier this year by Heather Gelbard.
Hasper Has Her Way
Lee Hasper singled to bring in the the only two runs against Pittsburgh in the FAU Classic, but she wasn't done at the plate the rest of the weekend. She hit .400 for the tournament, with two doubles and her first career home run in the 3-0 win over Rutgers on Feb. 19. Her four RBIs for the weekend trailed only Patterson's five for NC State.
Chamberlin Tops Team Offensively
Jen Chamberlin remains atop the Wolfpack offensive statistics in seven categories through 19 games this season. She is batting .411 on 23 hits including three home runs. She has driven in 18 runs, scored 13 times and has 36 total bases. Chamberlin's .643 slugging percentage is also tops on the team. She is second in doubles (4) and tied for third in walks with six free passes, striking out just three times all year.
Gelbard Goes For 5-for-5 With A Grand Slam
Sophomore designated player and third baseman Heather Gelbard had a game to remember on Feb. 13, going 5-for-5 against Mississippi Valley State with five RBIs and three runs scored, including a tie-breaking grand slam, the first slam in school history.
Chamberlin Boasts Big Inning
Jen Chamberlin had the most productive inning in NC State's brief softball history in a nine-run inning, a school record, against Howard on Feb. 12. Chamberlin led off the inning with a single, and would later score. When the Wolfpack batted around in the inning, she doubled in two runs before stealing third. She would score from third to complete her amazing stat line from that inning: 2-for-2, a single and a double, two RBIs, two runs and a stolen base.
Wolfpack Picked Fifth in the ACC in 2005
Head coach Lisa Navas' Wolfpack squad was picked to finish fifth in the ACC by a vote of the seven coaches. NC State garnered 18 league votes, trailing unanimous No. 1 Florida State (49), Georgia Tech (40), North Carolina (35) and Virginia (23). Maryland was sixth with 16 votes, while league newcomer Virginia Tech was seventh. NC State finished fifth in the ACC in 2004, posting a 3-7 league mark and a 32-27 record overall.
Quick Start, Then Quick Sand
After starting the season by winning 10 of its first 12 games, including seven straight, the Wolfpack has slowed its pace, dropping five of it's last seven games. The common factor? The last seven games have been played in Wilmington, N.C. (two) and in Boca Raton, Fla. (five), with both places being known for their beaches and sand.
