RALEIGH, N.C. - On Saturday and Sunday of last week, Nov. 5-6, six members of the NC State women's tennis team traveled to Winston Salem, N.C., to volunteer their time and efforts at the Special Olympics. Team alumnae Danielle Stadelmann joined seniors Barbara Orlay and Nandita Chandrasekar, junior twins Allison and Lauren Barry, sophomore Elin Stahl Johansson and freshman Neils Barringer in helping out with the tennis portion of the event.
Over 100 athletes participated in the tennis segment between the ages of eight and 60 in various categories determined by skill level. On Sunday at the conclusion of the event, the Wolfpack tennis team members presented medals to the athletes.
"The parents of the kids said that they were so glad that we were able to come and help out, but it was really an honor for us to be there," said Allison Barry.
"I could not think of a better way to spend our time, " added sister Lauren Barry.
The women's tennis team has been very involved in its volunteer efforts with the Wake County Special Olympics for the past few years and has grown very close with the organization. Head coach Hans Olsen and his team plans to continue a close-knit relationship with the organization.
"It makes you realize that you should be thankful for what you have," said Johansson. "They have so many obstacles in their lives, but they are all so happy."
Fresh off of the heels of a very successful fall jaunt, the Wolfpack women's tennis team are in the midst of team and individual practices for the remainder of the fall in order to continue getting ready for the spring.
