CARY, N.C. -
Sophomore Gavin Coombs, running unattached to preserve a redshirt year, easily outdistanced the field Saturday at the Wolfpack Invitational at the SAS Complex.
NC State did not enter the race as a team, and lined up just three runners in all, each of whom ran unattached. Coombs, the 2004 Atlantic Coast Conference Freshman of the Year, ran the 5K course in a time of 15:02.84, more than 14 seconds ahead of runner-up Mark Buha of Duke, who completed the course at 15:16.87. Freshman John Martinez was third at 15:20.48, and freshman Taylor Adams was 14th at 16:40.55.
Duke and Claflin College were the only schools that ran as teams, and Duke easily won the team score, 15-50.
