RALEIGH, N.C. - This weekend, Friday, Oct. 14, through Sunday, Oct. 16, three members of the NC State men's tennis team will head to Columbia, S.C., to play at the annual University of South Carolina Fall Invitational. Senior Will Shaw, junior Andre Iriarte and freshman Jay Weinacker will all compete for the Wolfpack. The trio enters the tournament with a combined 14-5 record in fall singles.
Shaw stands at 6-2 in fall play thus far. Last season, Shaw saw much playing time, especially at No. 4 singles, going 10-13 in spring singles with three conference decisions. The senior will look to play an impact role during his last year with the red and white.
Bringing a 3-1 record into the weekend, Iriarte returns to the fold after experiencing minor injuries over the past couple weeks. Last season he served as a mid-lineup staple for the team in spring singles, spending time at spots No. 2-5 while posting a 14-7 spring singles record. Iriarte's five ACC wins last year tied as the second-best mark on the team, along with sophomore teammate Nick Cavaday.
Freshman sensation Jay Weinacker will round out the Wolfpack lineup in Columbia. Boasting a 5-2 record during his first fall season in college, the highly touted rookie was ranked No. 1 in the USTA Southern Section at the end of his high school career. When the Wolfpack hosted the Residence Inn North Wolfpack Invitational in mid-September, Weinacker began his collegiate career by winning the singles championships in his draw.
Following this weekend's action, the Wolfpack will wrap up its fall schedule at the Wilson/ITA Mideast Regional Championships in Chapel Hill, N.C. The tournament is slated to run Wednesday, Oct. 19, through Monday, Oct. 24.
