NC State 81, Wake Forest 55
January 3, 2005
Reynolds Coliseum - Raleigh, N.C.
Coach Kay Yow - NC State
Opening statement:
"It was really great to start the ACC season with a win. It was on our home court and it is definitely key for us to win while at home. The team just played hard all around. They played hard on defense and was very aggressive on the offensive side of the ball. To get 26 assists just goes to show how well we played. I thought that Billie McDowell and Ashley Key played really hard on defense for us and then ran the court well to get back on offense and score for us. Overall it was a great team effort and it feels really good to get that fist ACC win against a very good Wake Forest team."
On first half shooting compared to shooting in practice:
"We do shoot the ball pretty well in practice. Then we'd get into a game and we would be shocked because we couldn't put those same shots down. Tonight was a great effort offensively for us and hopefully we can continue it. We can really shoot the ball well."
On next game against Vanderbilt:
"Vanderbilt has a very strong team, inside and out. They've also got a really good point guard. I think that can be a game that can help us see how good we are in the post. It's on their home court and it's going to be a great opportunity and challenge for us. We're going to go up against a strong team in Vanderbilt."
Ashley Key on aggressive play on offense:
"I was just following coach's orders. I was just going all out and getting aggressive on the offensive side of the ball. Once you go out there and get a stop on defense and then can turn around and score on the other end, you just get a lot of confidence from that."
Billie McDowell on first ACC win of the season:
"I just came in with the thought that it was our first ACC game of the season, and I wanted our team to do well. Wake Forest is a real good team, so we knew we had to show up. We knew we couldn't slack off. We didn't and it was a great win for us."
Coach Mike Petersen- Wake Forest
"Tonight wasn't much fun. We had been looking forward to this game and it just wasn't much fun at all. NC State played great and with a lot of energy. They really got into us, especially early. We went into the game trying to focus on Billie McDowell and Tiffany Stansbury and we really did a poor job, especially on McDowell."
"We have played a lot of zone this year against some really good shooters and tonight was as poor of a job as we've done against anybody. They did a really good job of feeding McDowell and Key the ball and those two hit a ton of shots."
"I thought that NC State played well and we just didn't compete. For the first time all season we weren't the most competitive team on the court. We thought that we would have to play our best game to win tonight and we didn't even come close."
