RALEIGH, N.C. - NC State freshman Khadijah Whittington is named Atlantic Coast Conference Rookie of the Week. Whittington, a native of Roanoke, Va., earned NC State's first ACC recognition of the year after helping NC State earn upsets at No. 23 Virginia Tech and No. 16 Maryland and a home win over Miami this last week. The 6-1 forward came off the bench to lead the team in rebounding at home against Miami with 10, while posting her first career double double. Whittington also reached double figures the last two games with 16 points against the Terps and 11 against the Hurricanes. At Maryland she set career highs in free throw percentage, (100.0, 6-6), steals (4), blocked shots (2) and minutes (31).
She has reached double figures in four of her last five games, all ACC games, including a career-high 20 points against No. 8 North Carolina. In addition, she posted at least two steals in all but one ACC game this season. The freshman is averaging 12.5 points per game, 5.7 rebounds per game in 23.8 minutes off the bench. She also has a team-best 13 steals in conference action and her scoring and rebounding averages rank second on the team for conference games.
NC State (15-4, 4-2) went 3-0 this week, including two wins on the road against ranked opponents, both resulting in an end to #23 Virginia Tech's and #16 Maryland's home winning streak. The Wolfpack's 67-55 upset in College Park, Md., marked the first win at Maryland since 2002 and first in the Comcast Center. NC State has defeated three ranked teams this season.
