RALEIGH, N.C. - The NC State women's tennis program began their spring season on Friday, Jan. 21, at the Georgia Invitational in Athens, Ga. On the first day of the three-day jaunt, the Wolfpack squad offered strong showings in doubles matches against Mississippi State, as well as during singles play against tournament host Georgia.
In the day's duals round, NC State was pitted against No. 69 Mississippi State. At the one spot, junior Barbara Orlay and freshman Elin Stahl Johannson fell to Zsuzanna Fodor and Anastasia Kugakolova, 8-2. Senior Danielle Stadelmann and sophomore Agustina Arechavaleta followed with a win, defeating Renee Joseph and Magdi Rekasi, 8-6. In the third and final doubles match, freshman Julia Roach and junior Virginia Romero lost a hard fought set, dropping to Hayley Rudman and Tarryn Rudman, 8-6.
For singles action, the Pack drew a very difficult opponent, squaring off with tournament host Georgia. Currently, the Bulldogs are ranked No. 13 in the nation by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA). The first match pitted two nationally ranked competitors in No. 10 Shadisha Robinson and No. 121 Orlay. Robinson dominated in the first set, but Orlay battled back during the second set and sent the match into a tiebreak. Capitalizing on the tiebreaker, Robinson collected the win, 6-1, 7-6(6). No. 39 Natalie Frazier was paired with Kristin Lam for the second spot. Fraizer collected the victory in two sets, 6-2, 6-3. At No. 3 singles, Stahl Johansson battled Evgenia Subbotina to a tiebreaker in another exciting pairing. Subbotina held on to seal the match after winning the tiebreak, 7-5, 7-6(8). Arechavaleta then fell to Kelley Hyndman at No. 4 singles, 6-0, 6-1. In the fifth match, Caroline Basu overtook Romero, 6-1, 6-2. Freshman Julia Roach collected the Pack's lone singles win of the evening during her spring debut against Anastasiya Shevchenko. The Raleigh, N.C., native dominated the match and won in two-straight sets, 6-0, 6-0.
While the matches will count towards player records, teams scores will not be kept.
Action will continue tomorrow at day two of the Georgia Invitational. NC State will take on Georgia again, this time in doubles action, at 9 am. For singles, the Pack will square off against Georgia State beginning at 1 pm.
Following this weekend's tournament, NC State will return home and indulge in a week of practice before hosting two home meets next Saturday, Jan. 29, at the J.W. Isenhour Tennis Center on campus. The Wolfpack will welcome Appalachian State at 11 am, before taking on Western Carolina at 5 pm.
