Red and Blue Collide; Packs Hosts Heels on Friday

Fans wear RED and WHITE to the game on Friday to support the Wolfpack. The first 4,000 fans will receive a pink wristband in support of breast cancer awareness and of Coach Yow.

RALEIGH, N.C. - NC State returns home to face in-state conference rival, No. 8/9 North Carolina, on Friday, Jan. 14. The game is scheduled for 8:30 p.m. and is to be televised on FOX Sports Net South. The Wolfpack, 12-3 and 1-1 in Atlantic Coast Conference play, leads the all-time series, 48-28 and is 23-6 at home against the Tar Heels. UNC will enter the game with a 12-2 and 0-1 record. As a special recognition of breast cancer awareness and for NC State's head coach Kay Yow's breast cancer recurrence, the players will exchange their white shoelaces for pink laces for the game.

The Wolfpack is coming off a tough five-day road trip that hit a high note with an 65-64 upset win over then No. 12 Vanderbilt on Jan. 6 and then soured with a fourth-straight loss at Clemson on Sunday, 78-65. NC State enters Friday's game with the intentions of keeping its home record perfect with a seventh win. The Wolfpack has two players averaging double figures, led by junior Tiffany Stansbury. The Philadelphia native is recording 11.1 points per game and also leads the team in rebounding with an average of 7.4 boards a contest. Sophomore Ashley Key is bringing in 10.1 ppg and has reached double figures in six of the last seven games. Senior point guard Kendra Bell is the team's leading assist maker with an average of 2.80 per game. Freshman Khadijah Whittington has tallied 48 points, 29 rebounds and nine assists off the bench in the last five games. She played a season-best 29 minutes and hauled in a season-high nine rebounds in the win at Vanderbilt. She is sixth on the team in scoring with an average of 6.8 ppg and has 4.0 rpg in just over 16 minutes of PT. She is averaging 9.5 ppg and 4.0 rpg in the two conference games. Whittington has reached double figures in four games, including three of the last five off the bench. As a team, NC State is ranked in the NCAA Top 25 in three categories, including scoring defense, turnovers per game and scoring margin. Individually, Stansbury is 37th in the nation for field goal percentage at 54.3 percent.
Associate head coach Stephanie Glance will step in as the interim head coach in the absence of Coach Yow. Glance has been by the side of Yow for 11 years, the longest tenure of any other assistant coach in the history of the Wolfpack women's basketball program. Overall she has nearly 20 years of collegiate coaching experience, including her 11 years with NC State, she has spent time at Southwest Texas and South Florida. The Clyde, N.C. native played collegiate basketball from 1982-85 at Rollins College in Winter Park, Fla. As a sophomore she helped to guide the Tars to their first winning season since 1970, with a 16-10 record. At NC State, Coach Glance is the recruiting coordinator and is also responsible for perimeter player development and assists in monitoring the players' academic progress.
The Wolfpack leads the all-time series, 48-28 and is 23-6 at home against the Tar Heels. However, the Heels have won the last three meetings in Reynolds. NC State did defeat UNC in Carmichael last season, 62-54, but fell to the Heels for a second time in three games, 75-64, to bow out of the ACC Tournament. North Carolina is coming off an upset loss to then No. 21 Maryland Terrapins, 92-77 on Jan. 9. It was the second-straight road loss for the Heels. The loss also marked the end to an overall winning streak of five games. UNC is 8-0 in Chapel Hill. The game with the Wolfpack is just the second ACC contest this season for the Tar Heels. UNC is led by sophomore guard Ivory Latta's 15.4 ppg and 5.1 apg. Freshman Erlana Larkins leads the team in blocks with 18 total and is second in scoring with an average of 15.1 ppg. Junior La'Tangela Atkinson leads the squad in rebounding with 7.6 rpg, while sophomore Camille Little rounds out the double figure scoring with 11.9 ppg.
The Tar Heels are led by 19th year head coach Sylvia Hatchell. Hatchell, once Coach Yow's assistant with the 1988 gold medal Olympic team, is 394-184 (.682) at UNC. After 30 years as a head coach, Hatchell's combined record from Francis Marion and UNC is 666-264 (.716). Yow owns a record of 665-303 (.688) and is 608-284 (.683) in her 30 years at NC State.
The Wolfpack leads the all-time series, 48-28 and is 23-6 at home against the Tar Heels. NC State went 1-2 last season against UNC, having defeated the Heels on their home court, 62-54, when UNC was ranked 13th in the nation. UNC won the last meeting, which was in the semifinals of the 2004 ACC Tournament, 75-64 in Greensboro. NC State has played more games against UNC than any other ACC team and will be entering its 77th game.
Note: Per NCAA policy, both games will count on Coach Yow's record at NC State and overall. She is still an active coach.
