Men's tennis freshman Nick Cavaday picked up two singles wins and two doubles wins, with senior teammate Conor Taylor (No. 36 ITA), at the Baylor Invitational during the opening rounds of play. The remainder of the team headed to Virginia, with five Wolflpack players winning in the first round of singles action. Six more players advanced in the back draw, with freshman Ben Zink reaching the quarterfinals of the back draw of flight B. In doubles at the Virginia Invitational, Zink teamed with junior Will Shaw to advance the finals of Doubles Flight B, winning three matches.
Cavaday has impressed with his play thus far, picking up wins at the competitive Baylor Invitational over Marko Despot (Troy St.) 6-2, 6-1 and Eric Molnar (Alabama) 6-4, 4-6, 7-6. Taylor, who was the No. 1 seed, fell 6-3, 6-3 to Ryan Stotland (New Mexico). In doubles, Cavaday and Taylor pushed by the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi duo of Plasencia/Roman 8-6, and downed Pierto/ Yenn of Colorado easily, 8-2.
After falling in the first round to Alexandru Cojanu 2 and 2, Zink rallied in the back draw of flight B, reeling off a 6-3, 6-2 win over Dominic Manilla of ODU and a tough win over teammate Mason Schermerhorn, who lost for only the second time this season in eight matches, 4-6, 6-4, 1-0.
Zink would team with Shaw to defeat Manilla/Antle in the opening round of doubles in flight B, winning by an impressive 8-0 score. They won two more matches by identical 8-4 scores to advance to the doubles final, downing a pair of teams from host Virginia.
Andre Iriarte will play in the back draw of Flight A after winning two matches after an opening round loss.
It is an all NC State semifinal in the second round of the singles B backdraw, as Charlie Drew, David Rozek, Ryan Johnson and Dennis Myers will battle it out for that title.
Both invitationals conclude on Sunday, Sept. 26.
