RALEIGH, N.C. - Jay Pyron has been named an assistant softball coach at NC State after spending a season at Barry University in 2004. Pyron, who has valuable club and high school experience, and a strong knowledge of the college game, will assist with coaching the outfielders and hitters, as well as overseeing equipment and helping with recruiting. He replaces Tanya Spishak, who was named an assistant AD at Regis College in August. At Barry, Pyron specialized with hitters and outfielders, and was the recruiting coordinator for the nationally ranked program. He helped with the Wolfpack softball camps this summer, and it was that interaction that helped Wolfpack head coach Lisa Navas make her decision that Pyron was the right person to fill the vacancy on her staff. "Jay built a great rapport with our players and staff this summer during camps," Navas remarked. "We are excited to have him as a part of our staff." Prior to coaching at Barry, Pyron coached in the Netherlands, leading an American Team in the Indoor Cup in 2003, and assisting Margo Jonker, a US Olympic assistant coach, in a clinic for European players. From 1998-2003, Pyron was a hitting instructor and coach for the Diamond Fever Softball Organization. He was also a substitute teacher and softball coach at Dan River High School. Pyron, a native of Keeling, Va., graduated from Averett University in Danville, Va. in 2002, earning his B.S. in Physical Education with a minor in coaching. "We had many very qualified candidates for the job, but in the end we felt Jay was the best fit for our team," Navas remarked.
