Abbie Sims Named ACC Softball Player of the Week

RALEIGH, N.C. - NC State freshman pitcher Abbie Sims is the ACC Player of the Week after winning two games during the week from the circle and hitting .417 at the plate. She pitched a one-hitter against Campbell, allowing only an infield single while striking out 12 batters, and followed that performance with a two-hit shutout against Radford on April 3. On the season, Sims is 17-6 with a 1.66 ERA, helping to lead NC State to a 25-17 record.
"This is a very exciting award for Abbie," coach Lisa Navas said. "She has done an outstanding job for us this season, and to get recognition in this conference is a big accomplishment."
Sims, a right-hander from Artesia, N.M., has been dominant of late, winning six straight decisions while posting a 0.35 ERA, striking out 44 batters in 39.2 innings of work.
In the two games during the week, she struckout 23 batters to only two walks in 14 innings of work, allowing just three hits. She allowed only a single to second base against Campbell, striking out 12 batters and walking only two in the 2-1 victory. Against Radford on Saturday, April 3, Sims struckout 11 batters, walked none, and gave up just two soft singles to shallow left field in her sixth shutout of the season.
She went 3-6 against Campbell at the plate, scoring once and drawing a walk. She notched an RBI against Radford, and was 5-12 on the week in four games for a .417 batting average.
Wolfpack softball returns to action Wednesday, April 7 as it travels to UNC-Greensboro for a doubleheader at 2:00 pm. NC State will then open ACC play with a road doubleheader with North Carolina on Friday, April 9 before hosting Maryland on Saturday, April 10. That doubleheader is slated to begin at 1:00 pm.
