Raleigh, N.C. - The NC State track & field team will be sending four athletes to compete in four events this weekend at the 2004 Indoor NCAA Championships being held at the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville, Ark. Four women will compete in four different races, two sprints and two distance races. The Pack will have one runner in each the 60 meters, 60 hurdles and 3,00 meters, and will have two runners in the 5,000 meters.
Senior Kristin Price will run in both the women's 3,000 and 5,000 meters. She is the sixth seed in the 3,000 meters and the 10th seed in the 5,000 meters. Just last weekend, Price set a new NC State school record in the 3,000 meters running a NCAA Automatic time of 9:09.41 at Florida. Price also won the 3,000 meters at the ACC Championships a couple weeks ago, the second straight year she has done so. In the 5,000 meters this year, she earned a NCAA Automatic time, the only time she ran the race, placing second at the ACC Championships in 16:12.74. At last year's NCAA Championships, Price earned All-American honors with her sixth place showing in the 5,000 meters, following up a 2002 season that saw her win All-American honors in both the 3,000 and 5,000 meters with her 10th and seventh place finishes respectively.
Also competing in the 5,000 meters will be Renee Gunning. Gunning is the 13th seed in that race, after running a NCAA Provisional time of 16:17.71 at Florida last weekend. Gunning also ran a NCAA Provisional time in bringing home a fifth place finish at the ACC Championships. Gunning also has NCAA Championship experience, finishing 11th in the 5,000 meters at the 2003 Outdoor NCAA Championships.
Both Felicia Fant and Ebony Foster will be making their first trips to the NCAA Championships to compete in the sprints. Fant will run in the 60 meters, while Foster will compete in the 60 hurdles. Fant is the ACC Champion and school record holder in the 60 meters, while Foster has matched her also winning an ACC Championship and setting the school record in the 60 hurdles. Fant is the 17th seed with a top time of 7.39, while Foster is the 16th seed running a 8.22.
The NCAA Championships will be held this Friday and Saturday. The prelims of the 60 hurdles will be run on Friday at 5:50 p.m., and the prelims of the 60 meters will follow at 6:15 p.m. The finals of the 5,000 meters will be Friday night at 7:50 p.m., and the finals of the 3,000 meters will take place Saturday at 7:35 p.m.
